Because people are stupid, that's why.
No one realistically games on a Macbook Air.
Thanks for calling me stupid. I play my steam bought games on my nVidia equipped Air. I don't have much choice this being my only computer.
And the SNB IGP is actually very capable. Their GMA offerings have generally always been crap but the 3000 is quite the opposite.
It's still less capable than nVidia's 320M which is what now, 2 years old ? Good job Intel! Always behind by a generation. Keep them graphics coming.
That said, the main use for the Air is as an ultraportable. And the improved battery life and lowered heat output are major advantages for an ultraportable that only a moron would ignore.
Then I'm a moron. I'd rather have the current 7 hours of battery life and current "heat" (what heat ? My MBA doesn't "heat up" at all, even compared to my old MacBook) than a downgraded GPU.
Drop the name calling. The major advantage of an ultra-portable is size and weight. This is why I bought the Air. If it didn't have a 1440x900 screen or a 320M, I wouldn't have bothered to upgrade the MacBook.
Playing Wow on 11" must be quite an experience. One must be quite an addict in order to want to play Wow on an MBA while on the go, I did hear that game was highly addicting. So, from a point of view, I understand the position of the people you call "stupid".
Why assume people want to game on the go ? I don't game on the go with my MBA, I usually use it to VPN to work on the go or to do some hobby programming. However, when home, I plug it into my external monitor and I game there. Why wouldn't people with 11" do the same ? Play some WoW/StarCraft/Civilization/Portal/Whatever at home when "docked", unplug and take the laptop on the Go for other tasks they need to do away from home ?
Are you guys so short sighted you can't see a lot of us don't have 2 computers ? What's the use when the MBA is capable of everything ?

ummmm, yes they do.
There are plenty of other links (http://www.gadgetsgeek.ly/2011/02/15/apple-to-purchase-7-8-billion-in-parts-from-samsung/) as well supporting Apple's importance to Samsung as their largest customer.
No they don't. These 8 billion dollars is just a drop in a bucket for Samsung. Their annual revenue is well above $100 billion. As I said, Apple represents just 4% of Samsung sales.

Look forward to an OS update around the corner as well. There were rumblings about 10.4.8 being seeded recently--I think updated machines are likely to correspond with software and OS updates as well.
We'll see soon enough--if there is a "special event" my guess would be that it's for something completely new, not a new processor and certainly not a speed bump.

This is exciting, since my music library already tops 16 GB and isn't shrinking any time soon. Now, I saw a little bit about it in the article, but does anyone else know if the general consensus is that ALL of ones music could be stored? As opposed to just iTunes-purchased songs. That's crucial.
knowing how apple is.....probably itunes purchases only.

I'm a Green Peace supporter, but with Bush in the Whitehouse, don't they have bigger fish to fry?
I agree. Apple is in the spotlight a great deal so they are using this as a method to market themselves.

Type the following in the Terminal:
cd /Applications/iTunes.app/Contents/MacOS
strings * | grep -i phone
Where did you get that...says Motorola Phone and other phone related items.
Wish it said iPhone.
What else did you pick up from it?

Personally I'm a huge fan of daisy chaining. Less devices, less cables, less clutter. You just attach each device to the next.
What is it you have an aversion to?
That's what I was thinking, I thought the whole point of Thunderbolt was that it had so much throughput you could daisy chain as much stuff as you wanted without a drop in performance.
The question is, was the second thunderbolt port necessary to drive two external displays, or could you daisy chain them ad infinitum like Steve Jobs thinks you should do?

No one else has yet mentioned that the Airport Extreme is currently reflecting a 1-3 week shipping period (http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/wo/1.RSLID?mco=B842E400&nplm=M8799LL%2FA), while the Airport Express (http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/wo/1.RSLID?mco=7D88DA55&nplm=M9470LL%2FA) still says it will ship within 24 hours on the Apple Store Online. It would seem that it is the Extreme and not the Express to be getting the update.

The unibody was already a giant leap forward. How much better can Apple get?
I'm more interested in the specifications, and hardware (electronics) not so much the casing.
+1. Why I upgraded from my early 2009 15" MBP to my new 2011 15" MBP. Form was already awesome but I wanted a machine that was on par speed-wise with my 2008 MP.
Thinner, no optical...perhaps SSD only?
SSD on a per GB basis is still way too expensive. For those of us doing media work big hard drives are still needed. Now, a good solution are the current line-up of Seagate Momentus XT hybrid drives.
Oh boo hoo. No new case since 2008?
We Mac-Pro user are so very sad for you.
Amen! Although, I'm less interested in a show horse and more interested in a workhorse. For me it comes down to speed of encoding, rendering, working with large files, multi-tasking, opening/closing tons of applications and overall efficiency.

Does anyone think a slightly bigger version of this would be a fantastic desktop?
I, for one, would be happy to spread the Word to the ignorant masses if Apple came out with a cute little white tower to match everyone's cute little white iPod. :P The Mini's nice, and the new iMac is nice too, but I think this thing could help Apple a lot in the desktop segment. I'd say something like that's bound to come out at some point, but when is the big question.
Also, it's probably been mentioned earlier in the thread, but does anyone know how long after Kentsfield Clovertown is supposed to come out? I heard "early 2007" a while ago, but with Kentsfield coming out so early, I would think Clovertown won't take that long.
P.S. Is it my connection, or is the Mac web starting to slow down as it struggles to handle all the traffic generated by the upcoming Apple event?

What I don't understand is how Amazon was able to get all those studios on board, but not Apple.
Amazon is letting the studios set the pricing, that's why more jumped on board. But if this article (http://money.cnn.com/2006/09/18/technology/lewis_unbox.fortune/?postversion=2006091909) is any indication they won't be there for long. ;)

I already did that (explain myself) and you said I was ignorant for doing so - didn't leave me many options, really. :)
mmmmmmmmmmm i just went thru the whole thread and you most certainly have not explained any of your statements, other than saying aperture needed new towers to run properly.
and i want to be clear that i am not neccesarily disagreeing with you, i just want to know why you seem so decisive in your statements with no explantion to them. if you are so sure, i want to know why so i can either agree with you and stop waiting for this ^%$$%#$@#!ing MBP that never seems to get here, or i can disagree and wait until the 24th.
if you are not willing to explain yourself then you are just trolling

Why do they want OS X users to feel as if we were on an iPad!!!???

This is what I've been hoping for. You purchase a "license" and your content is available anywhere on any device. You can download it locally as well, but it's there in the cloud waiting for you. Movies/Music/Games etc. The end to buying on multiple formats, worry about losing/deleting etc. But I'm not sure this model will end up beating out music/movie subscription services.

Can sombody explain the following:
"old" 5G 30 GB: music playback 14 h, video playback 2 h.
"new" 5G 30 GB: music playback STILL 14 h, video playback ALMOST DOUBLED at 3.5 h.

why are you confused??? video play got extended, what do you expect more than that??
i'm just glad that my 5gen didn't get outdated so fast

LOL! You might want to ask them what the data rates on the actual hard drive (or drives) in the case is. LaCie makes nice stuff, but it's quite gimmicky to only talk about interface transfer rates when the real performance is dependent on the hard drives.
2.5" laptop hard drives, at that, for the 1TB model.
In RAID-0 no less, so the probability of failure is doubled.
ETA: Two 500GB 7200RPM RAID 0 drives should be pretty fast. Quick check on a random such drive and kicking around some numbers gives around 2GB/s sustained. Fine, you win, we can transfer that HD movie in 2.5 minutes instead of 30 seconds ...
Do you mean 2 Gb/s ? No laptop drive can sustain 1 GB/s - few can sustain much more than 100 MB/s.

Kentsfield is Intel's next revision of their "Core" processors which was originally scheduled to be released in the 1st Quarter of 2007. According to the article, it is now planned for late 2006 availability.
Uh, you guys reported this part (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2006/07/20060720090504.shtml) some time ago.
